DevBlog #14 Don’t spend your time on trying to do everything, instead do this! Oh, and have a power bar..
Hi everyone,
Time for another blog. After getting my upgrade I could finally turn to developing my game From Hell.
One of my intended features is going to be Power Bar which will be changing accordingly to player jumping to platforms. – If player is jumping, the bar will go up, which will then lead to more powerful attacks that player can deal to enemies.
Currently it looks like this:
This is of course initial implementation and will be changed in color, appearance in the future. (And will have less bugs : ) )
By the way, background and some of the functionality I am using for prototyping is from 2D kit, made by awesome indie game developer Thomas Brush (his website is here).
Reason for using already made functions is quite simple – my goal here is not to create 2D environment from scratch. Instead, I want to focus on development of certain feature here – the power bar. In this way I can test it instantly with most common features found in 2D platformer games – moving around, jumping and interacting with environment.
In my mind it is the best way of development when you can concentrate on most important things and don’t need to worry about something that isn’t really related to your goal. Of course, after some time, when I will be done with developing this feature, I will start working on adjusting other things (moving, jumping, etc. ) to suit my needs better.
So that’s it for this week’s blog. I know, it is a short one, but this week was quite unproductive since my upgrade for PC came just yesterday.. Next week there will be surely more progress made and more content to share with you all.
Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments or in game’s Discord channel!
As always, thanks for reading, don’t forget to subscribe for weekly game development blog and have a great day!
